Driver Charged with Vehicular Manslaughter in Fatal Seattle Bus Collision
The driver of a car involved in a collision with a Metro bus in downtown Seattle on Saturday that left a woman dead and 12 people injured has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, according to the Seattle Police Department.
The 31-year-old driver of the red sedan that crashed into the bus at an intersection and sent it hurdling onto a sidewalk and into a building was charged after Seattle police investigators alleged they found “possible drug usage in the vehicle” and obtained a warrant to draw the man’s blood for testing as part of a DUI investigation in this case.
The sedan driver’s identity has not been disclosed. He is currently in critical condition at a hospital and will be booked into the King County Jail once medically cleared from Harborview Medical Center, stated the police.
The victim, identified as Amanda Joelle Schneider, 28 years old, lived near the crash site. She succumbed to multiple blunt force injuries, as confirmed by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The tragic incident occurred in Seattle’s Belltown area at approximately 3:30 PM local time on Saturday. According to the Seattle Police Department, a King County Metro bus traveling east collided with the southbound red sedan at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Battery Street.
As a result of the collision, the bus veered off the road, crashing into a nearby building. Schneider, who was walking on the sidewalk outside the building, was struck and killed by the bus. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency personnel had to extricate the sedan driver from the vehicle, as it had also crashed into the building. The bus driver and 10 passengers suffered minor non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police.
Fortunately, no one was inside the part of the building affected by the crash, and the fire department confirmed that there was no significant structural damage to the building.
