A suspect, identified as a 23-year-old man, was arrested on November 3 at around 9:55 a.m. while attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border into the U.S. The suspect was driving an older-model 1995 pickup truck and was headed to the Calexico West Port of Entry. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detected “irregularities” in the suspect’s vehicle during an imaging scan, prompting them to bring in a K-9 unit. The K-9 unit alerted officers to the presence of narcotics.
Upon further examination of the suspect’s truck, officers discovered 41 packages hidden inside the spare tire and rear seat area of the vehicle. These packages contained approximately 840,000 blue pills that were later confirmed to be fentanyl. The total weight of the packages was determined to be 185.41 pounds, and the estimated street value of the pills was $8.4 million.
Both the fentanyl pills and the pickup truck were seized by border patrol officers, and the suspect was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is typically used for treating severe pain, particularly advanced cancer pain. However, illegally-made fentanyl, often mixed with other drugs like heroin or cocaine, has become the leading cause of overdoses and deaths in the United States.
According to Roque Caza, the Calexico Area Port Director, fentanyl continues to be the deadliest drug threat in the nation. This seizure is a testament to the exceptional performance of the border patrol officers, who display vigilance and dedication in their efforts to keep communities safe.
In Southern California, the number of fentanyl-related deaths has significantly increased over the past six years. This ongoing crisis has prompted calls from local lawmakers and victims’ families for stricter laws and penalties concerning fentanyl.
Overall, this incident highlights the ongoing battle against the illegal drug trade and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to prevent dangerous substances like fentanyl from entering the country..
