A police officer has been placed on leave after shooting a man accused of killing a grocery store employee in Monticello. The incident occurred at Fareway Meat and Grocery, with the employee later succumbing to his injuries. The shooting is under investigation by multiple agencies. The Des Moines Register reported

In Monticello, a tragic incident unfolded on Thursday night when an officer shot a man accused of killing a grocery store employee. The Monticello Police Department received a report about a shooting at Fareway Meat and Grocery, located at 420 North Farley St. at approximately 7:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
The victim of the shooting was identified as Aaron McAtee, a 48-year-old Monticello resident. Despite being rushed to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, McAtee tragically succumbed to his injuries.
During the investigation, Nathan Russell, a 38-year-old individual from East Dubuque, Illinois, became a person of interest. Fortunately, a Delaware County deputy located Russell in Hopkinton.
However, when the deputy attempted to apprehend Russell, he allegedly failed to comply with instructions and was subsequently shot. Russell was also transported to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics to receive medical treatment for gunshot wounds.
As a result of the incident, the deputy involved has been placed on critical incident leave pending the ongoing investigation. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, are collaborating to thoroughly examine the shooting.
The Jones County Attorney’s Office and the Delaware County Attorney’s Office are also reviewing the shooting, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the incident. Chief Britt D. Smith emphasized that there is currently no active threat to the public.
