Four Arrested After Shots Fired at Unmarked Police Vehicle in New Haven
Incident Details
In New Haven, Connecticut, four individuals, including two juveniles, were apprehended on Tuesday evening following a shooting incident directed at an unmarked police vehicle. The gunfire erupted around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Hamilton Street and Grand Avenue. Multiple witnesses promptly contacted emergency services, providing descriptions of two vehicles believed to be involved.
Police Response
Plainclothes officers, who were engaged in crime suppression operations in the vicinity, observed one of the vehicles speeding away from Hamilton Street. The officers, using an unmarked police car, decided to pursue the fleeing vehicle. However, as they gave chase, one of the individuals inside the pursued car fired shots at the unmarked police vehicle.
A high-speed pursuit subsequently unfolded, spanning through Fair Haven, the East Shore District, and onto the I-95 south connector before transitioning onto I-91 north. The pursuit was only brought to a halt near Exit 9 on I-91 south.
Arrests and Assistance
Upon the vehicle’s stop, three out of the four occupants fled on foot. However, all four individuals involved in the incident were eventually apprehended by the authorities. The New Haven Police Department received assistance from both North Haven and state police in capturing the suspects.
Crime Scenes and Weapons
Following the incident, police secured two separate crime scenes. The first was located on Hamilton Street, while the second was on the intersection of East Grand Avenue and Lexington Street. It was discovered that several vehicles and buildings in the area had been struck by gunfire. Remarkably, no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.
Upon further investigation, law enforcement officers recovered three firearms from the scene. The New Haven Police Department is currently conducting an ongoing investigation and is actively seeking additional evidence, including video surveillance footage. The vehicle involved in the incident was towed for processing as potential evidence.
Identification of Suspects
Among the four individuals arrested, two were identified as adults: 18-year-old Tony Gibbs from New Haven and 19-year-old Elija Black from East Haven. Both adults have been charged with conspiracy to commit assault in the first degree, weapon possession in a motor vehicle, carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a high-capacity magazine, larceny of a motor vehicle, and obstruction of an officer.
In addition to these charges, Black faces additional accusations, including unlawful discharge of a firearm and multiple existing warrants from East Haven, Connecticut. Gibbs and Black are currently being held on a bond of $1 million each.
