Mooresville police officers responded to a call at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville, N.C., where a man identified as 56-year-old Robert William Berry was reportedly threatening to harm himself. According to hospital security, Berry had placed a gun in his pocket before leaving his vehicle in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers spotted Berry in the parking lot, still armed with the gun. They issued multiple commands for him to drop the weapon, which he initially complied with. However, Berry then picked up the gun again, posing a threat to the officers’ safety. In response, one of the officers shot Berry multiple times.
Following the shooting, officers immediately attempted life-saving measures on Berry before transferring him to the care of hospital workers. Tragically, Berry succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital. The officer who fired the shots has not been identified by the Mooresville Police Department, and is currently on administrative leave pending further investigation into whether department protocols were followed. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting its own independent investigation alongside the MPD’s administrative investigation.
To provide updates on the investigation, Mooresville police will be holding a news conference at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
