A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Savannah’s west side, resulting in the death of one woman. According to a press release from the Savannah Police Department (SPD), officers were called to the 500 block of West Gwinnett Court at around 8:45 a.m. in response to reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman who had sustained severe injuries that appeared to be life-threatening. Swiftly, she was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center for immediate treatment. Unfortunately, despite the efforts to save her life, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
This shooting incident marks the 21st homicide of the year, as per the statistics provided by the SPD. Mayor Van Johnson addressed the incident during his press briefing today, revealing that a nearby school, later identified as Gadsden Elementary School, had been placed on a soft lock down as a precautionary measure. However, a spokesperson from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School clarified that the school remained open as it was an e-learning day and no students were present on the premises.
It is truly disheartening to witness such acts of violence within our community. The authorities are undoubtedly working diligently to investigate and bring justice to this tragic incident. As we mourn the loss of a fellow community member, it is important for us to come together and support one another during these difficult times.
