Man Fatally Struck by Car Following Crash on Interstate 5 in San Diego
A devastating incident unfolded on Sunday night in downtown San Diego, as a 37-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a car moments after a previous collision on Interstate 5. The California Highway Patrol officer shared this tragic news on Tuesday.
The initial crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. when a Nissan Versa collided with a Nissan Altima, causing the latter vehicle to block the middle lanes of northbound I-5, just south of state Route 163. According to CHP Officer Salvador Castro, the impact rendered the Nissan Versa immobile in the left two lanes, facing east, without any activated lights.
Following the crash, the driver and three passengers of the Nissan Versa exited the vehicle and found themselves standing in the lanes. Tragically, a BMW 428i sedan crashed into two of the individuals and the disabled car, resulting in severe injuries for both victims. They were immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where one of them succumbed to their injuries. The deceased man was identified as a Mexican citizen; however, his name has not been released pending notification of his family.
Details regarding the second victim, such as their age, gender, and condition, remain unknown at this time.
Due to the accident, the northbound lanes of I-5 had to be closed for approximately two and a half hours, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area.
CHP Officer Salvador Castro confirmed that neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to have played a role in the crash. However, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the CHP at (858) 293-6000.
