Obituary – Death News : Indian agronomist and agricultural scientist M. S. Swaminathan, a well-respected figure in the field, passed away on September 28, 2023. The news of his demise has left the scientific and agricultural communities in mourning.
Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Swaminathan dedicated his life to revolutionizing agricultural practices in India and beyond. His extensive work in the field earned him the title of “Father of the Green Revolution in India.”
Swaminathan’s groundbreaking research and innovative techniques played a pivotal role in transforming India’s agricultural landscape. His contributions focused on developing high-yielding crop varieties, promoting sustainable farming practices, and empowering farmers with knowledge and technology.
Throughout his illustrious career, Swaminathan held various prominent positions. He served as the Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) from 1961 to 1972 and later became the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) from 1972 to 1979.
Internationally recognized for his expertise, Swaminathan also served as the President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) from 1984 to 1990.
